Jermaine Jackson getting divorced from third wife

Minnesota residents who were fans of the Jackson 5 might be interested in learning that Jermaine Jackson's third wife filed for divorce on June 23. The couple has been married for 12 years.

On Nov. 28, 2015, Jackson's wife, Halima Rashid, was arrested for domestic violence following an altercation the pair had in which the police were called. Reportedly, Jackson had spit on Rashid and she had bitten his leg. Prosecutors later dropped the case, stating that they couldn't figure out which of the pair was abusing the other.

In her divorce petition, Rashid stated that the couple's separation was the same date as her arrest in the domestic violence incident. The pair has no children. Rashid is asking the court to order spousal support. She listed the reason for wanting a divorce as irreconcilable differences.

People who do not have children or whose children have grown and are now on their own will still need to deal with property division when they make a decision to end their marriage. When couples have been together for a long time, their assets will often be fairly entangled. This may make it more difficult to figure out how the property should be divided. Minnesota follows the principle of equitable distribution, which means that a court will divide marital property in a manner that it deems to be "fair". However, what may be fair to a judge may seem inequitable to one or both parties. As a result, estranged couples may want their respective family law attorneys to attempt to negotiate a settlement agreement instead. This could often produce a superior result in less time and for less expense than would litigation.
