Getting divorced after being married for decades

Minnesota residents may be interested to learn that more and more couples who have been married for decades are getting divorced. These splits often occur once the children have left the home and couples realize they are not as in love with each other as they once were.

Although it is becoming more socially acceptable for individuals to get a divorce later in life, taking that step can be difficult especially if they had been married for 20 years or more. Separating a lifetime of assets and finances are not the end. Each person must also figure out how they will continue to support themselves. Additionally, emotional stress can result in anger and hurt feelings. Regardless, there are still ways a married couple can prepare for the end of their marriage.

One of the first things that separating couples should do is understand their finances. Former couples may be required to live on a fixed income if both individuals are retired. In some cases, a person may have to consider getting a job. Former couples will need to figure out new living arrangements if the home is being sold and the proceeds divided. They should try to embrace change and be flexible to make their new start work.

If both individuals agree that ending their marriage is the best option, a family law attorney may assist with an uncontested divorce. This allows the process to be finalized quickly so both parties can move on and begin a new phase in their lives. The attorney can help in the negotiation of a settlement agreement that covers property division and other applicable legal issues.
