Lessons to be learned from sexual assault claim against CeeLo

Recently, singer CeeLo Green made national headlines when prosecutors declined to file sexual assault charges against the 39-year-old. The case against him, and lack of evidence, also served as a reminder that not all accusations are true. This is something any Minneapolis or St. Paul resident who is facing criminal sexual assault charges should keep in mind.

In the case against CeeLo Green, a 33-year-old woman claimed the singer put Ecstasy, also known as Molly or MDMA, in her drink while the two were at a sushi restaurant in July. After allegedly being slipped the drug, she reported waking up without any clothes on in a hotel room with Green.

After looking into the allegations, prosecutors did not have enough evidence to press charges against Green. However, they did move forward with a felony count of furnishing a controlled substance charge. Green has already appeared in court to plead not guilty to this felony charge.

If convicted, this felony charge carries with it a maximum four year prison sentence.

Overall, this case involving Green touches on a few important facts, with the first being that not all allegations are true. However, even in cases where prosecutors do decide to move forward with charges, it is still possible to beat these charges by challenging what the state has to say and the laws.

This is where a criminal defense attorney with experience handling sex crimes cases can step in. This attorney can look at the state's version of the facts and the suspect's version of the facts. This will help the attorney know what approach to take in the courtroom in order to defend against erroneous or exaggerated charges.
