Increase in drug cartels could mean more methamphetamine charges

Anyone convicted for drug crimes related to methamphetamine in Minneapolis can end up spending a serious amount of time in prison. This is true for the person who is accused of just possessing methamphetamine for personal use, as well as being blamed for trafficking and transporting the drug throughout the state.

Over recent years, there has been an uptick in the number of Mexican drug cartels in the Upper Midwest, including in Minnesota. The spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Minnesota said it is believed that Interstate 35, which runs from the Mexico border through Minnesota, has a lot to do with the increase.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, in 2008 there were roughly 230 communities in the U.S. that reported some type of Mexican drug cartel presence. By 2011, the number of communities reporting this presence increased to 1,200.

In looking at the issue, these drug cartels are known as being the suppliers for a number of illegal drugs, including prescriptions, marijuana and cocaine. These drug cartels are also known as the primary suppliers of methamphetamine throughout the country.

For those who are accused of being somehow mixed up in these types of drug cartel operations, the consequences can be quite severe and can end up having legal ramifications that can continue to impact a person's life well after their sentence has been served. This is why it is important to talk with a Minneapolis methamphetamines crimes defense attorney as soon as an arrest has been made.
