50 Cent asked to pay more child support

Minnesota residents who are fans of rapper 50 Cent may be interested to learn that he has been asked to make higher child support payments for the care of his 19-year-old son Marquise Jackson. 50 Cent currently pays $6,700 per month to his son’s mother Shaniqua Thompkins, and he will be responsible under New York state law for making child support payments until his son turns 21.

Thompkins reportedly filed a petition for a child support order modification with the New York family court. She asked the court to order 50 Cent to make higher monthly payments because Marquise is going to college. Thompkin’s attorney did not offer any public statement on the matter besides confirming that there is an issue about 50 Cent paying for his son’s education.

According to reports, 50 Cent and his son Marquise may be estranged. In 2014, it was noted that 50 Cent did not attend his son’s high school graduation. The rapper also sent an angry text message to his son surrounding a visitation issue that became public.

Child support issues can become a great deal more complicated when parents do not get along with each other. Regardless of the relationship, however, a court order requiring the payment of support must be followed. While most states terminate the requirement to pay when the child turns 18 or otherwise becomes emancipated, others continue it past that age under certain circumstances, such as when the child has special needs or is continuing to pursue educational opportunities. There has been no reports indicating that the rapper has been derelict in his duties in this regard, however.
