Drug charges related to the sale or production of methamphetamine in Minnesota are taken very seriously. Quite often, these types of charges can result in serious consequences, including time in prison.
Take for example the case of a Burnsville business owner who recently pleaded guilty to drug possession with intent to distribute. This guilty plea was entered in federal court in Minneapolis.
At this point a sentencing date is yet to be set, but the federal charge does carry with it a mandatory 10 year prison sentence.
Originally, the 36-year-old was charged in Dakota County District Court. After all, he was accused of being involved in one of the largest meth busts ever in Dakota County. However, the charges against him in the county were dropped when the federal charges against the man were filed.
As was mentioned in the beginning of this post, these types of charges are taken very seriously.
These charges came after task force agents raided his home in May. During this raid, 12 pounds of meth, three guns and $16,000 in cash were found. The man also admitted to selling the meth earlier in the day.
However, this 36-year-old claims he was not the only one involved in the operation. Rather, the argument was the meth actually belonged to another person and was only just dropped off at his home the same night as his arrest. Had he not been arrested, the other person was supposed to be coming back the following morning to pick the meth up.
Overall though, given the severity of the mandatory sentence in this case, it should serve as a lesson to anyone facing similar charges in the Twin Cities area.
